OK, “swanky” wasn’t the word I used—someone who attended the grand opening used it. (smile) But I liked the description and thought it fit. A lot of people worked hard to get the building ready and make it a nice event, and I was pleased with the way it turned out.
And I’m SO glad it’s over! It’s been more than two years in the making, and now it’s official—Brick Canvas is opening! We invited community leaders, politicians, staff, and family and friends to celebrate the ribbon cutting with us on Wednesday night, and more than 200 people were there. The skies were a little overcast but not too bad (the ribbon-cutting was held outside), and kept the temperatures very pleasant.
Everyone gathered outside the building, and a few people spoke briefly. I was touched and humbled (and a little embarrassed) by their words, but it was gratifying to hear that people understand that Sterling and I want to make a difference in people’s lives. Brick Canvas is a great way to do that, on lots of different levels.
After we cut the ribbon, everybody came in and toured the building. We had fabulous entertainment (a four-piece jazz band) that played outside during the reception and then played upstairs in the open lobby area during the tours, so the building was filled with lively music.
The food was amazing (if I do say so myself!), arranged beautifully and tasted even better than it looked. . . fresh locally grown vegetables, an irresistible array of breads and cheeses, salmon bites to die for, roast beef that melted in your mouth (and I don’t normally like red meat!), and absolutely delightful desserts. It wasn’t a sit-down meal, but I hope no one left hungry!
Visitors went through each area, where staff greeted them and answered questions. We even had models (with all kinds of different hairstyles) posing in the salon, which really added to the environment.
We’re not quite done yet. . .a few finishing touches left to do. But I feel good about where we are, and am looking forward to the coming days and weeks as people start to discover Brick Canvas!
